The first location and starting point on our GI Trail itinerary is The Argory in Dungannon. This National Trust property was built in the 1820s and its hillside location has wonderful views over the gardens and 320 acre wooded estate bordering the River Blackwater.
This former home of the MacGeough–Bond family has a splendid stable yard with horse carriages, harness room, acetylene gas plant and laundry. Take a stroll around the delightful gardens or for the more energetic along the woodland and riverside way-marked trails.

The Argory During the Second World War
This National Trust property was home to the 654th Tank Destroyer Battalion of the US Army who sailed from Brooklyn, New York on board the Queen Mary, arriving in Clyde before crossing the Irish sea to Larne, finally boarding a train to Moy. Before their arrival the US 5th Army used the camp here before departing for the invasion of Italy. The men of the 10th Division, 5th Army got the house ready for the arrival of the 654th Battalions on 20th October 1943.

Keep an eye out for clues of the American presence, such as drawings on the walls of the bookshop which was used by the army as a storeroom.
